John B. Hood marched from Winstead Hill to confront the Federal troops already entrenched on the outskirts of Franklin, Tennessee. About a half hour later, the troops clashed in bitter combat which raged for five hours, leaving nearly 10,000 killed, wounded, missing, and captured.
